Common RV Questions: Yes, I Even Talk About Where We Go #2

Ever since we began full-time RV living, people have asked us some interesting questions.

Many of those questions sound funny now, but I remember having many of the same doubts before we started. Because of that, I wanted to address the most common RV questions we receive in one clear, helpful post.

Some questions come from people who think living in an RV is a little crazy, while others come from readers who are genuinely curious but unsure about certain aspects of the lifestyle. Either way, I hope this answers a lot of the common RV questions we get asked.

You never know — maybe I’ll convince a few of you to try it. 🙂

Below are questions we’ve been asked by friends, family, readers, and even strangers in grocery store parking lots after they see us get out of the RV. Explaining RV life to people is always interesting and usually fun. I love answering questions and helping others get excited about this lifestyle!

1. Do you shower?

Yes — of course we shower. Our RV has a functioning shower with hot water. We have a tankless water heater, which isn’t perfect all the time but provides enough hot water for comfortable showers. We use soap, shampoo, and everything else just like at home.

2. Who dumps the gross stuff?

My husband Wes handles the tanks. I made a lighthearted rule when we started RVing that I would never be the one to dump the tanks — and that rule has stuck.

3. What do you do when you have to use the bathroom?

We use the RV toilet just like a regular toilet. It’s a flushing toilet, so bathroom life is essentially the same as in a traditional home.

4. How and what do you eat?

We prepare meals in our RV kitchen. It’s equipped with a table, refrigerator, microwave, stove, convection oven, and a slow cooker. We cook most meals the same way we would at home.

5. What do you do for internet?

I use a Verizon MiFi device for internet access. RV park Wi-Fi can be unreliable, so if you plan to work online while traveling, I strongly recommend having a dedicated mobile hotspot or similar solution to stay connected from most locations.

6. Why are you RVing? Do you like it?

We love RVing for many reasons:

  • We enjoy traveling and exploring new places; RVing lets us visit many more destinations than staying in one spot.
  • We like having our home with us so we don’t need to pack up every time we move.
  • It’s a relatively affordable way to live and see the country.
  • It’s comfortable and convenient to bring our living space to the places we want to experience.

7. Is RVing safe?

Yes. We’ve never felt unsafe while traveling in our RV. Like any lifestyle, it helps to be aware of your surroundings and take sensible precautions.

8. Do you ever do laundry?

Yes, we do laundry. Many RV parks offer laundry facilities, so we use laundromats at parks as needed.

9. What do your dogs do all day?

We often get questions about our dogs. Some people worry they aren’t happy living in an RV, but our dogs have several places to sleep, room to stretch, and daily routines that keep them healthy and active. We hike every day — our larger dog walks around 5–10 miles daily and then naps the rest of the time; our smaller dog prefers indoor time and fits well with RV life.

They also enjoy outdoor activities like paddle boarding and regularly get affection and attention while on the road.

10. Do you hate each other yet?

Nope. Living in close quarters has actually brought us closer together.

11. What do you do for a living so you can RV full-time?

Many people assume you can’t earn money while traveling, but you can. I work online through my blog and other digital channels. It’s possible to make a living remotely if you have an online business, remote job, freelancing work, or other portable income sources.

12. How do you receive mail?

We use a mail forwarding service. Our mail goes to a permanent address provided by the forwarding company, which then forwards mail to wherever we are staying.

13. Where do you like to stay?

We don’t usually prefer crowded RV parks, although there are some great ones. When we do stay in parks, we like a spot that backs up to something scenic — ocean, desert, mountains, or protected parkland. We often choose campgrounds in state or national parks for better views and more space.

14. What kind of gas mileage do you get in your RV?

We average about 14–15 miles per gallon, which we consider good for our rig. Some RVs get significantly lower mileage, often under 10 mpg.

15. Why would you want to explore the U.S.?

Because it’s fun. The United States has an incredible variety of landscapes and attractions — national parks, coastlines, deserts, mountains, and more. Traveling by RV lets us experience all of it up close, and it’s one of the best ways to see the country.

Common RV Questions

Common RV Questions

16. Are you happy in your RV?

Absolutely. We’ve never been happier. The lifestyle suits us, and we’re excited about the future. The only minor regret is not anticipating long-term RV living earlier — we’d like to tow a car, but our current RV can only tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Other than that, everything is great. Our upcoming plans after Tucson include Phoenix, Sedona, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion, Moab, several places in Colorado, and eventually the Florida Keys. It promises to be an amazing year.
