Welcome to Day 4!
This lesson covers a topic many of you have asked about: how bloggers actually make money. There are several reliable income streams for blogs, and I’ll explain the most common methods below.
Where does blog income come from?
Many aspiring bloggers wonder where blog income originates. Simply put, you earn money from whoever is paying you for the value your blog provides.
- Affiliate marketing: you earn a commission when someone purchases or signs up through your affiliate link.
- Sponsorships and direct ads: companies pay you to display their promotional content or sponsored posts on your site.
- Display advertising: ad networks like Google AdSense and other providers pay you based on impressions and clicks.
There are countless companies and ad networks looking to pay bloggers. Payments are typically made via PayPal or by mailed checks, depending on the partner.
Can new bloggers make money blogging?
Yes — there is plenty of room for new bloggers to earn an income. Many people have started blogs after seeing income reports and successfully begun earning. I’ve met bloggers who launched later than I did and now earn multiples of my income.
The online audience continues to grow, and every blogger brings a unique voice, niche, and approach to monetization. Because the digital landscape is diverse, there are many ways to monetize a blog, and I expect those opportunities to expand over time. For these reasons, I believe there will always be opportunities for new bloggers.
How long does it take to start making money blogging?
There’s no single answer. Results vary widely depending on niche, effort, strategy, consistency, and luck. Some bloggers start earning a few hundred dollars within months; others scale to thousands per month within one or two years. A few become very successful more quickly, while some never monetize meaningfully.
Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you commit time to learning how to grow and monetize your site, it can become lucrative. The timeline depends on your work, the strategies you apply, and how fast you learn and adapt.
What ways can a person start making money blogging?
Common methods to monetize a blog include:
- Affiliate marketing (covered in tomorrow’s lesson)
- Sponsorships and paid posts
- Display advertising
- Writing and selling ebooks or digital products
- Freelance or staff writing for other publications
Can blogs get sponsored?
Yes. Sponsored content and paid advertising can take many forms: sponsored reviews, guest posts, sidebar ads, newsletter placements, and more. You can pursue sponsorships by pitching advertisers directly, joining influencer or ad networks, or waiting for companies to approach you. There are many platforms and advertisers actively seeking blog partnerships, so once your site has an audience, sponsorships are often accessible.
What is display advertising?
Display advertising consists of placing ad units on your site—such as in the sidebar, below posts, or within the header—and earning money based on impressions and clicks. It’s straightforward to implement: your ad partner provides code that you place on your site. Generally, higher page views translate into higher display ad revenue.
Popular ad networks include Google AdSense, Media.net, and specialized networks like AdThrive or BlogHer. AdSense is particularly common for beginners because it’s easy to set up and works by serving ads chosen by Google; you are paid based on clicks and impressions.
Is making money from an ebook realistic?
Yes—if you have expertise or unique insights to share, an ebook can be a strong revenue stream. Many creators earn thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars per month from digital products like ebooks. Success depends on the quality of your content, understanding your audience, marketing the book effectively, and pricing it appropriately. Case studies exist of bloggers who scaled their income substantially through ebooks and related digital offerings.
Can a blogger make money writing for others?
Your blog can serve as a portfolio to land paid writing opportunities. Freelance or staff writing rates vary, but many writers start around $25 per article and increase their rates as they gain experience and results. Some writers earn thousands per month writing for other sites; others command high per-article fees thanks to the credibility and samples their blog provides. Building a website makes it easier for editors and clients to find and hire you.
If you want to pursue paid writing, maintain samples on your blog, clearly list services or contact information, and actively pitch publications that align with your expertise.
