Below are several practical ways to make money while traveling. If you want actionable ideas and strategies for earning on the road, read on.
1. Run a website.
Running a website or blog is how I support my travel lifestyle, so this is the first item on the list. Building a website takes time and work, but it can provide side income or a full-time living. Blogging revenue can come from display ads, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, product sales, online courses, ebooks, and more.
I publish detailed monthly online business income reports that explain how my site earns revenue. If you’re starting from scratch, follow step-by-step tutorials to set up a blog and consider free courses that teach the basics of content creation, growth, and monetization.
2. Find local work where you travel.
If you plan to stay in a destination for an extended period, look for local jobs. Options include:
- Bartending or restaurant work.
- Positions at hotels, campgrounds, or hostels.
- Seasonal or short-term farm work.
- Jobs on cruise ships or yachts.
- Tutoring or teaching.
- Au pair roles caring for children while living with a host family.
- Teaching English as a foreign language in many countries.
3. Freelance writing or virtual assisting.
Freelance writing and virtual assisting are flexible careers that suit travelers. Many clients allow remote work, so you can complete assignments from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Freelance writers can specialize in travel content, personal finance, marketing, or niche industries. Virtual assistants handle tasks like email management, scheduling, research, and customer support—either as one-off projects or ongoing contracts.
These options are accessible, scalable, and can be combined with other income streams. Entry points include freelancing platforms, pitching blogs and magazines, and building a portfolio or website showcasing your skills.
4. Sell products online or offline.
Selling physical or digital products is another way to earn while traveling. Some travelers sell handmade crafts, local finds, or artwork at markets. Others run online shops on platforms such as Etsy, eBay, or marketplace sites, shipping items from wherever they are. Digital products like printables, photo presets, ebooks, and courses remove shipping logistics and can provide passive or semi-passive income.
5. Build passive income.
Passive income reduces the need to work constantly and helps you enjoy destinations more fully. Passive options include dividend investments, rental property income, affiliate marketing, royalties from digital products, and automated online businesses. Building meaningful passive income takes planning and upfront effort, but it can greatly increase freedom while traveling.
6. Housesit.
Housesitting can dramatically cut accommodation costs. Some assignments are unpaid but provide free lodging in exchange for property and pet care. In some cases, owners offer payment. Housesitting platforms connect homeowners with travelers who can look after homes while they’re away.
7. Work remotely for your existing employer.
If your current job allows remote work, discuss flexible arrangements with your employer. Some people travel for extended periods while keeping the same role by working remotely. If your workplace is open to it, remote work can be the simplest path to location independence. Reliable mobile internet options like mobile hotspots or MiFi devices make remote work more feasible while traveling.
