Many bloggers overlook affiliate marketing. They assume it’s too difficult, a waste of time, that promoting products will drive followers away, or simply that their audience won’t be interested.
In a recent informal poll of bloggers, the most common reported income from affiliate marketing was around $500 per month or less. Some reported earning nothing at all, even among bloggers who receive over a million page views a month.
These bloggers share a common problem: they don’t realize how much potential income they’re leaving on the table, and they don’t know how to approach affiliate marketing the right way.
That surprises me, because I never relied on massive page views early on. Even with fewer than 100,000 page views a month, I earned a respectable income from affiliate marketing.
Last month I earned over $50,000 through affiliate marketing, and I expect this level of income to remain stable or grow in the future. And importantly, none of my readers have complained about the affiliate content.
Many bloggers and influencers avoid affiliate marketing because they fear appearing pushy or turning readers off. In my experience, that fear is largely unfounded. When affiliate promotions are done properly—transparently and selectively—readers rarely object. Some even encourage more recommendations because they find them useful.
When implemented thoughtfully, affiliate marketing can be a reliable income stream without alienating your audience. In fact, many readers welcome curated product recommendations from trusted creators and are comfortable purchasing through affiliate links.
Affiliate marketing is great for many reasons, as you will read below.
Affiliate marketing is a form of semi-passive income.
One major appeal of affiliate income is that you can create a single post, guide, or review that continues to generate revenue for months or years with minimal upkeep. That said, affiliate income isn’t completely passive: you must build an audience, publish consistently, earn trust, and occasionally update content. Still, a single well-optimized link or post can provide long-term income with little maintenance.
For example, one post I wrote, “How To Start A WordPress Blog On Bluehost,” has earned more than $300,000 over time.
It requires less work than creating your own product.
Affiliate marketing isn’t effortless, but compared to building and selling your own product, it removes many headaches. You don’t need to produce or ship physical products, manage returns, or handle customer support for the merchant. Your responsibilities focus on creating content, growing your audience, and recommending products you genuinely trust.
It’s affordable to start.
Affiliate marketing is an affordable way to grow income. You don’t need to develop a product, manufacture inventory, or invest heavily up front. In many cases you don’t even need a website; social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be enough to promote affiliate products.
If you choose to run a website, it can be inexpensive to set up and maintain, making affiliate marketing accessible to creators at many stages.
You can get paid for products you already believe in.
If you love certain products or services, affiliate marketing lets you share them and earn for doing so. Promoting products you genuinely use and trust makes your recommendations more authentic and easier to communicate. Honest, enthusiastic endorsements tend to resonate with readers and help them make informed decisions.
There are countless products and niches to promote.
Affiliate programs cover an enormous variety of products, services, and industries. Whatever your niche or audience, you can likely find relevant offers to recommend. Potential categories include:
- Financial services and tools
- Mobile apps
- Digital products like online courses and ebooks
- Items sold through large marketplaces
- Travel booking platforms
- Blogging and web services such as hosting and design
- Clothing and fashion
- Home decor and furnishings
- Craft supplies
- Outdoor gear such as tents, backpacks, and bikes
Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Building a loyal, trusting audience takes time and consistent effort. But if you cultivate an engaged readership, affiliate marketing can become a meaningful and sustainable income source while allowing you to recommend products you already enjoy.
You can work from anywhere.
One of the biggest benefits of affiliate marketing is location independence. With a laptop, an internet connection, and an engaged audience—even a small one—you can grow your affiliate earnings from anywhere. Affiliate income has enabled me to travel full-time while maintaining my business.
If you’re exploring affiliate marketing, consider sharing your experience: what you earn and how much traffic you have. Openly sharing results helps the community learn and improve.
