Earned $40,000 in One Night Selling POD Shirts on TikTok Live

Do you want to learn how to earn money selling print-on-demand products on TikTok?

Print-on-demand (POD) lets you sell shirts, sweatshirts, and other items without buying and storing bulk inventory. The biggest challenge for many sellers is generating consistent sales, especially when starting out. This interview with April, founder of Poppy Rose Print Company, explains how she built a thriving POD business using TikTok Shop and TikTok Live while working from home as a mom.

1. Tell us your story — who are you and why did you start Poppy Rose Print Company?

Hi, I’m April. I launched Poppy Rose Print Company as a work-from-home mom. The name comes from my daughters, Primrose and Poppy, and building a business that allowed me to stay home with them was a central motivation.

I began on Etsy using a POD provider. I loved not having to keep inventory at home — a huge benefit when caring for young kids. At one point I tried producing shirts myself and it became overwhelming. POD removed that burden and let me scale without a warehouse or production staff.

Transitioning from Etsy to TikTok Shop and then embracing TikTok Live changed everything: I went from about $30,000/month in TikTok sales to spikes of hundreds of thousands in a month. That growth required consistency, learning, and a willingness to improve on camera.

2. What do you sell and who buys from you?

Poppy Rose focuses on graphic apparel—mainly shirts and sweatshirts. Designs are often seasonal, faith-based, holiday-themed, or trendy everyday statements that resonate with women.

Our core customers are women—moms, teachers, boutique shoppers, and Christian women—who want comfortable, expressive apparel. Holiday collections (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) and faith-based pieces perform especially well. Timely designs tied to upcoming events consistently drive sales, and social proof (showing how many items sold) boosts conversions during Lives.

3. What is print-on-demand and why choose POD?

Print-on-demand means you design and list products, but a third-party prints and ships only when a customer orders. You avoid upfront bulk purchases, storage, and manual fulfillment. I use a POD platform to create designs and list products; when an order comes in, the provider prints and ships it.

POD suits creators and parents who need flexibility. While per-item costs are higher than bulk production, the reduced risk and time savings make scaling easier without inventory headaches.

4. Why expand from Etsy to TikTok Shop and use TikTok Live?

Etsy is search-driven—buyers look for specific items. TikTok is discovery-driven: viewers scroll, find content, and decide to buy based on connection and excitement. TikTok Live amplifies that connection by letting sellers show items live, answer questions, run promotions, and build community in real time. People buy from people; Lives make shopping social and engaging.

5. What is TikTok Live selling and how do you prepare?

TikTok Live selling is streaming live and promoting products directly in the stream. You can pin products, demo samples, answer questions, run flash sales, give coupons, and do giveaways.

Preparation is crucial: list multiple products in your TikTok Shop, stage samples, load the cart, plan flash sales or bundle offers, and register the Live in advance. Pre-registration and promotion increase attendance—one of my best Lives had 500+ registered viewers before it started.

6. What revenue and expenses should new sellers expect?

TikTok Live dramatically increased revenue for my business, but revenue varies by season, frequency of Lives, and promotions. Holiday months tend to be much larger. Remember revenue is not profit: expenses include POD item costs, shipping, platform fees, samples, giveaways, tools, and occasional contractors. POD margins are typically lower per item than bulk production, but the tradeoff is lower upfront risk and easier scaling.

7. Team and operations

Early on my family helped with fulfillment, but POD removed the need for in-house production. I now have a small team who assist with Lives, customer messages, mockups, and listings. Even with POD, day-to-day tasks include design, product selection, Live planning, trend watching, and customer service.

8. A $40,000 Live — what made it work?

That Live was planned and promoted. I had hundreds registered, scheduled an evening time when viewers are most active, and prepared product sets, cart items, flash sales, coupons, and giveaways. During the stream I prioritized energy, urgency, and connection: thanking buyers by name, setting engagement goals tied to giveaways, and keeping the experience fun rather than pushy. The result was strong sales and high engagement.

9. How often do you go live and how do you plan them?

Evening Lives (around 5–8 p.m.) usually perform best, though daytime Lives can work. I plan Lives around themes—holidays, gifts, or faith-based topics—and ensure each stream has a purpose, product selection, and promotions. Preparation consistently improves performance.

10. How do you choose designs?

I base designs on trends, seasonal demand, sales history, and customer requests. Start with research: see what sells, what’s trending, and what your audience asks for. Designs that evoke an immediate reaction—“That’s me” or “I need this for Thanksgiving”—sell best.

11. First 30 days plan (step-by-step)

  1. Week 1: Research niche, trends, and upcoming seasons. Decide on a target customer.
  2. Create a small, focused collection (don’t overwhelm yourself).
  3. List products on TikTok Shop with clear photos, titles, and pricing.
  4. Make simple videos showcasing mockups and product details—post consistently.
  5. Invite affiliates or creators to promote early, building reach.
  6. Start going live: schedule and register Lives, prepare a product set, offer a small discount, and be honest about being new.

12. Tips for nervous first-timers

Expect mistakes and be authentic. Tell viewers it’s your first time, greet people by name, answer questions, and keep energy up. The audience is often supportive; authenticity builds trust faster than perfection.
