Until recently, I wouldn’t have called myself an outdoorsy person. Over the past year my life has shifted, and with it my idea of what’s enjoyable. I used to shop constantly—something that now feels surprising to remember. I’ve learned that having fun doesn’t have to cost a lot. There are plenty of low-cost and free activities that are enjoyable and fulfilling, and discovering that has been a pleasant change.
Being frugal isn’t the same as being miserly. Choosing inexpensive or free activities doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck inside staring at a blank wall. On the contrary, many affordable options let you get outside, be active, and enjoy time with family and friends without stretching your budget.
This article highlights a variety of frugal and free activities to try, including ideas for free summer fun with family, children, and friends. Below are several suggestions—simple, accessible, and budget-friendly ways to spend your time. If you’re interested in local ideas, I also have a separate post listing frugal activities specifically in St. Louis.
Kayaking in a new area
Kayaking can be inexpensive, especially if you rent locally. Many parks and outfitters offer daily rentals for around $10. If you already own a kayak, paddling becomes a completely free activity. For a lower initial cost, look for used kayaks on classified sites or local sales. Exploring new waterways is a great way to experience nature and have an inexpensive adventure.
Camping as an affordable getaway
Believe it or not, I had never gone camping until recently. Getting started can require some initial purchases—tent, sleeping bag, and basic gear—but once you own them, camping trips become one of the most economical travel options. Compared with hotel stays, camping is far cheaper and offers a refreshing way to reconnect with nature. With a little preparation, an overnight or weekend trip can feel like a real escape without a big price tag.
Hiking nearby
There’s likely a trail, park, or green space within easy reach where you can spend a few hours hiking. Close to home we have a park with trails that make for an easy outdoor escape. I also love visiting family property that has acres of land with creeks and cliffs to explore—places like that are perfect for long walks and discovering scenic spots. Hiking is a simple, free way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise.
Bike rides on trails or through your town
A bicycle can be a modest one-time expense that pays off in repeated, low-cost outings. We’ve been taking more bike rides lately and really enjoying them. Some routes require driving to reach the trailhead, which can be a small drawback, but even short neighborhood rides are rewarding. Riding a bike is an easy, healthy, and largely free summer activity to add to your routine.
Attend local festivals
Many towns host festivals, concerts, and community events year-round, and a surprising number are free. In St. Louis, for example, several summer concerts and festivals have featured major performers at no charge. Botanical gardens, air shows, and street festivals often offer free admission or free activities, making them great options for affordable outings. Keep an eye on local calendars for family-friendly events near you.
Visit the library
The library is a fantastic free resource that I haven’t used as much as I’d like. Libraries offer more than books—many provide workshops, story times, community programs, and quiet spaces for learning. Spending a few hours browsing, reading, or taking part in a free program is a pleasant and inexpensive way to enrich your days.
Share your ideas
There are countless frugal activities that still feel fun and meaningful. What low-cost or free activities do you enjoy? When was the last time you did something frugal that felt genuinely enjoyable? Sharing ideas helps everyone find new ways to have fun without overspending.
