1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you first got started freelancing?

My name is Samer Bazzi. I started freelancing in 2004 by reaching out to small local businesses advertising on Craigslist that needed websites. At the time, even basic HTML skills set you apart, and I quickly began helping entrepreneurs get their businesses online.

2. How much have you earned on Upwork, and what freelance services do you offer?

I’ve earned close to $4 million on Upwork. My personal profile accounts for roughly $3.4 million, and my agency has generated about $1.2 million more, putting total earnings between four and five million dollars.

The journey involved hard work and long weeks, especially during high-demand periods like the pandemic when client needs surged and I worked around the clock. Those intense times were also the most rewarding.

My main specialty is paid marketing—PPC, conversion rate optimization (CRO), and funnel optimization. That’s where I built my reputation and deliver the most value for clients. While I’ve taken on various projects over time, paid marketing has remained the core of my services.

After that, I refined my process—improving proposals, learning to interview clients proactively, and clarifying the type of clients I wanted to serve. Moving from taking every job to being intentional about client fit helped me overcome doubt and build a sustainable business.

Think of early lower-paid work as laying a foundation. Once you have social proof and demonstrated results, it becomes easier to increase rates and attract clients who value your expertise. Start modestly if needed, but always plan to move toward charging what you’re worth.

8. What advice would you give to someone who has applied for jobs on Upwork but hasn’t landed anything yet?

Don’t give up. Upwork success often comes down to two approaches: volume or quality. Some freelancers write highly customized proposals for each job; others focus on submitting many strong proposals quickly.

Both can work. I favored volume: I developed a powerful template that highlighted my skills and credibility, then presented it to many potential clients. Consistency is crucial—the more proposals you send, the greater your chance of connecting with the right client. Once you secure that first job, momentum builds and opportunities increase.

9. Looking back, what are the top three things that helped you reach nearly $4 million freelancing?

Reaching this level wasn’t instant. Three practices made a major difference:

First, prioritize excellent client care. Strong relationships and long-term contracts are the foundation of stability and growth.

Second, learn to decline or step away from clients who aren’t a good fit. That preserves your time and energy for clients who truly value your work.

10. If someone wanted to follow in your footsteps, what step-by-step process would you recommend to get started?

First, find a mentor with real experience—someone who has navigated the ups and downs of freelancing and can help you avoid common mistakes. Avoid short-term “gurus” with limited track records; a seasoned mentor can save you years of trial and error.

Next, set up your account properly: build a strong profile, choose a clear niche, and create messaging that tells clients exactly what problem you solve.

Finally, start submitting proposals. Don’t overthink it. If you have the skills, the work exists; the challenge is learning an efficient path, avoiding wasted time, and following proven systems that help you scale.

11. Can you share more about your mentorship program and who it’s designed to help?
