How to Become a Stella & Dot Independent Stylist — Income Guide

Hello everyone. If you are new to this site, my focus is on helping people earn extra income to improve their financial lives — for example, by becoming a Stella & Dot stylist. Before I left my day job, I was earning roughly $5,000 to $10,000 a month on the side through my online business. That side business is now my full-time work and I love it.

Today I share the next installment in my “Extra Income” series, featuring Stella & Dot opportunities. If you would like to be featured in this series, please send an email. Other hustles in the series are available on the site.

I’m a wife, mother of a three-year-old daughter, and a public health dentist.

Recently I decided to join friends as an independent stylist with Stella & Dot, the jewelry and accessories company. I was seeking a creative outlet and a flexible, enjoyable way to make extra income.

As an independent stylist with Stella & Dot, I share and sell beautiful jewelry and accessories online, at in-home trunk shows, and at pop-up shops. The company has thousands of active stylists and operates in a large global market.

The products are regularly featured in style magazines and described as modern-vintage boutique pieces that are chic yet affordable. I love their designs — statement necklaces, earrings, bracelets, scarves, bags, and tech accessories — which is a big reason I got involved.

How did you get started as a Stella & Dot independent stylist?

Over the past year I worked on a business plan for an academic indoor play center. Those plans are currently on hold, but the process awakened my entrepreneurial spirit. When my best friend told me about the opportunity to become a stylist last November, I was curious to learn more. She had reconnected with friends who were finding success with Stella & Dot, and I decided to join them.

What attracted you to become a Stella & Dot independent stylist?

By day I work as a public health dentist. I wanted a creative outlet and have always loved fashion and jewelry. I enjoy meeting new people and expanding my network, so this opportunity felt like a natural fit. I was also looking to earn extra income to save toward a future business idea like the indoor play space I mentioned.

What do you do as a Stella & Dot independent stylist?

I find individuals and businesses — such as salons, spas, and restaurants — to host trunk shows or pop-up shops. I bring samples, set up displays, and encourage guests to try on pieces while offering styling tips. I also participate as a vendor at events like wedding fairs, holiday markets, and consignment sales. I always look for new hostesses and potential stylists to join my team.

The core of the business is hosting trunk shows or pop-up events in homes or other venues where a host invites friends, family, or coworkers for a fun gathering. We also sell products online through personal e-boutiques. Anyone who hosts an in-home show gets a personalized online link so guests who can’t attend can still shop. Hosts earn style rewards — free or half-price items — typically worth around 25% of the show’s sales.

What surprised you most about working with Stella & Dot?

The biggest surprise has been how effortless it feels when you do something you’re passionate about. This really doesn’t feel like work. Being part of a social-selling company has been a great introduction to entrepreneurship; there is a wealth of training and support to help stylists build successful businesses.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?

In direct sales you must put yourself out there. Networking and making connections are essential. I’ve learned not to fear asking people and not to be discouraged by “no.” Every no brings you closer to a yes.

How much does it cost to start as a Stella & Dot stylist?

One of the best features of Stella & Dot is the low startup cost. It takes $199 to get started. Your starter kit includes business supplies and about $350 in product credits to choose from. New stylists also receive 50% off for the first 30 days to quickly build a sample collection.

What’s the most rewarding part of your role?

Working as an independent stylist offers many rewards. The culture is supportive and inspiring, and being part of a network where people actively help each other grow is motivating. I’ve also improved my personal jewelry and accessory collection. Hostesses receive style rewards, and one of the best parts of the job is getting to give away free items to grateful hosts.

What are your business goals for the coming year?

My goals are to be consistent with sales and events by holding about four to six shows or pop-ups per month, and to grow my team by sponsoring new stylists and sharing the opportunity with others.

Thank you to Michelle for hosting a show and for the chance to share this guest post. If you have questions about the products, hosting a show, or joining Stella & Dot, please visit my site or send me an email.

Michelle’s Online Trunk Show / Giveaway

This section is from Michelle. I agreed to review a Stella & Dot product and was excited to do so because I’d already admired many pieces on the website for some time.

I wanted a piece suitable for a wedding and I’m glad to have partnered with Alyssa. I received the Somervell necklace with matching earrings, which arrived in attractive boxes. I plan to wear both pieces at my wedding; they complement my dress and add a touch of personality. I also plan to purchase a few items as gifts for my bridesmaids.
