I launched Making Sense of Cents almost six years ago. Since then, my blog has earned more than $4,000,000 in total, including about $979,000 in one year alone.
Blogging transformed my life. It lets me earn thousands of dollars each month doing work I love, gives me flexibility, and supports the lifestyle I want.
I started the blog on a whim after reading about a personal finance website in a magazine. At first it was just a hobby — a place to track my finances and progress. When I began in 2011, I honestly didn’t know people could make money from blogging.
My interest grew, but it remained a hobby. I wanted a space to write about my finances, get support, and stay accountable. I didn’t set out to monetize, but within six months I earned my first income from a blog advertisement.
A friend from the blogging community connected me with an advertiser, and I earned $100 from that single deal.
That small payment sparked my curiosity about earning more from blogging and motivated me to take the blog more seriously.
Today I earn a comfortable living from my blog — something I never expected when I started. Blogging enabled me to take control of my finances, work from home, travel when I want, and set my own schedule. When I began, I knew almost nothing about blogging — I didn’t even realize blogs could generate income. Five years later, I regularly earn $100,000 a month and enjoy the freedom my blog provides.

How I earned my first income from blogging.
I launched Making Sense of Cents in August 2011 without a plan to monetize. It took time to realize blogging could be profitable, but six months in a blogger friend connected me with an advertiser and I earned $100.
That modest payment was motivating. By summer 2012 — one year after I started — I was making about $1,000 a month. By the following summer I reached about $10,000 per month. My income kept growing: over $320,000 in 2015 and $979,000 in 2016.

You’ll need a blogging plan.
If you want to learn how to make money blogging, start with a plan. I created my first serious blogging plan in 2015, and my income accelerated quickly after that. Early on I missed opportunities because I didn’t plan. A clear plan helps you set goals, stay focused, and move forward consistently.
Ask yourself these questions when you build your plan:
- What will your blog be about?
- How will you monetize your blog?
- How will you grow your audience and reach more readers?
- What specific goals are you working toward?
A plan clarifies priorities and next steps so you can make steady progress.
Start your blog on the side.
Begin blogging alongside your current job. That’s how I started. Doing it part-time lets you test whether you enjoy blogging, see what income you can realistically earn, and avoid financial pressure while you grow your audience.
Blogging can be unpredictable — algorithms change and trends shift. Starting on the side made it fun and manageable for me, because I had my day job income as a safety net.

Create high-quality content.
High-quality content is essential to grow traffic and monetize your blog. You don’t need formal credentials, but you should be knowledgeable or genuinely interested in your topic. Passion and useful information attract loyal readers who return again and again.
To produce great posts:
- Choose topics you’re passionate about so you’re motivated to create useful content.
- Survey your audience and answer the questions readers are asking — many strong post ideas come from reader inquiries.
- Research thoroughly: read articles, gather statistics, and verify facts.
- Write long, helpful posts. While short pieces can work, comprehensive articles often perform better. Many of my posts exceed 2,000 words.
- Edit carefully. I used to proofread posts many times; now I work with an editor to maintain quality.
Be passionate about your blog.
Successful blogs are usually driven by passion. Blogging involves many tasks — writing, research, promotion, networking, monetization — and enjoying the work makes it sustainable. I’ve loved helping readers improve their finances since the beginning, and that enthusiasm keeps me energized even during busy stretches.
Network with others.
Networking is crucial. Connect with other bloggers, attend conferences, and share others’ content. Treat fellow bloggers as collaborators, not competitors. Networking helped me earn my first $100 and has been a key source of learning and opportunities throughout my blogging journey.
Be ready to put in hard work.
Blogging takes real effort. To succeed you must:
- Set up and maintain a blog.
- Publish high-quality content regularly.
- Learn promotion, SEO, and social media.
- Understand multiple monetization strategies.
- Continuously learn and adapt.
Early on I spent over 10 hours a week on the blog while working a full-time job. Later I juggled 40–50 hours a week on top of my day job. Now that I blog full-time, my hours vary — some months light, others intense. Loving the work makes long hours manageable.
Diversify how you make money blogging.
There are many income streams for bloggers. I recommend diversifying so you aren’t dependent on a single source. Diversification protects your business during slow months and when a revenue stream declines.

Affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing involves linking to products or services and earning a commission when readers buy through your link. It can be a powerful, relatively passive income source if you create posts and email sequences that continue to convert over time.
Affiliate marketing is my favorite monetization method. I earn roughly $50,000 per month from affiliates through blog posts and email funnels that consistently drive conversions.
Affiliate marketing tips:
- Use a link shortener or plugin to clean up long affiliate URLs so they look professional.
- Give honest reviews. If a product has flaws, disclose them.
- Negotiate higher commissions if you perform well with a program.
- Build relationships with affiliate managers — they can share coupons and offers with you.
- Publish tutorials demonstrating how a product helps readers.
- Create a recommendations page listing tools and services you trust.
- Don’t overuse affiliate links — include them thoughtfully throughout a post.

Advertisements, partnerships, and sponsorships
Advertising and sponsored partnerships are common early monetization paths — it’s how I began. Brands pay to advertise on your site or sponsor posts. Today I earn roughly $15,000–$20,000 per month from direct sponsorships and partnerships, often initiated by companies that reach out to me.

Display advertising
Display ads are passive: you place ad units on your site, and earnings rise and fall with pageviews. Popular ad networks include Adsense, Media.net, MediaVine, and Raptive. I use Raptive and typically earn $1,500–$3,000 per month from display ads.

Create your own product
Selling your own products — ebooks, online courses, or tools — gives you the most control over income. I launched a course on affiliate marketing and now earn $20,000–$50,000 per month from it. Once created, products can generate semi-passive income while helping your audience achieve results.
Have an email list
Start building an email list from day one. My biggest blogging mistake was waiting years to take email seriously. Email subscribers are yours: you don’t rely on social algorithms, and they offer the best channel to promote affiliate products and courses.
Why email matters:
- Your newsletter is yours. You control the list and how you communicate with subscribers, without depending on social platforms or search engines.
- The money is in your list. Email often converts better than other channels because subscribers opted in to hear from you.
- Email subscribers are loyal. People who invite you into their inbox tend to trust you and engage with your recommendations.
- Email delivers other content well. With an email platform you can build automated courses, welcome series, and funnels that nurture readers into buyers.
Keep learning about blogging.
Blogging and online marketing change constantly. Invest time and sometimes money in books, courses, and tools to keep improving your skills and growing revenue. Below are several resources I’ve used and recommended over the years:

Building traffic matters, but quality and reader engagement matter more than raw pageviews. Some blogs with huge traffic earn less than focused blogs with loyal audiences. Learn what your readers need and deliver consistent value.
Tips to increase pageviews and engagement:
- Publish high-quality posts – Create helpful content readers want to return to.
- Be active on Pinterest – Pinterest drives substantial free traffic for many blogs. Create eye-catching images and schedule them consistently.
- Use other social platforms – Explore Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and others that suit your audience.
- Post regularly – Publish at least weekly for most blogs so readers don’t forget you.
- Network with other bloggers – Collaborate, share, and support peers genuinely.
- Guest post – Writing on other sites brings new readers to your blog.
- Make sharing easy – Ensure share buttons work well and social sharing text looks clean and readable.
- Create catchy headlines – Titles strongly influence whether readers click and engage.
- Learn SEO – Invest time learning search optimization to attract organic traffic.
- Make browsing easy – Help readers find related content with clear navigation, categories, tags, and internal links.
